Once you have your neti pot, you want to make sure you are using the right neti pot solution for your individual needs. The salt solution mix for your nasal irrigation has to be exactly right to prevent damage to your nasal cavities, and to properly cleans the sinuses.

It is preferable to find pre-made neti pot solution, or else use packets that are pre-measured to be mixed with a precise amount of water. Distilled water is best. Trying to adjust the mix yourself can result in stinging or burning, or worse. There are two types of neti pot solution strengths: isotonic and hypertonic. Isotonic is designed to precisely match the salinity of your body. This is a very soothing rinse, and at the proper warmth, you may not even feel it traveling through your sinuses. Hypertonic solutions, on the other hand, have a higher salt content. This is designed to help dry out your sinuses, reducing swelling by pulling moisture out of the tissues. Be aware, however, that some research has shown that the irritation caused by hypertonic can actually increase inflammation of the nasal tissues.

To avoid problems with improperly mixing a nasal lavage solution, you may consider buying a neti pot that comes in combination with mix packets. Some neti pots have measuring marks on them so you can know you are getting the right mixture when using the same brand pre-measured packets.

Picking the proper neti pot solution is safer, and yields better results, than trying to mix one yourself.
